Webinar: Practical Perspectives on LiDAR‑Based Power Curve Testing in Complex Terrain
The increasing scale of modern wind projects—driven by taller turbines, larger wind farms and development in remote or weather‑exposed locations across Australia—is placing growing pressure on conventional approaches to power curve testing.
In response to these challenges, Barlovento Applus+, together with Enertis Applus+, is organising a technical webinar focused on the practical application of ground‑based and nacelle‑mounted LiDAR for power curve testing in complex and semi‑complex terrain.
The session will focus on how LiDAR technologies are currently being applied in real projects, examining their capabilities and limitations in comparison with traditional measurement approaches. Particular attention will be given to site calibration requirements, operational constraints, and the type of technical evidence that is still required to support the broader consolidation of LiDAR‑based methodologies within industry practice.
Key topics to be addressed include:
- The main technical and operational challenges affecting power curve testing in complex terrain, including safety, access, scheduling and cost considerations.
- A comparison between met masts, ground‑based LiDAR and nacelle‑mounted LiDAR, highlighting strengths, limitations and appropriate use cases.
- Current accepted industry approaches to power curve testing and the role of site calibration in complex terrain.
- Experience from case studies using GBL and NML in complex and semi‑complex sites.
- Key gaps in technical evidence and data needed to support the future evolution of LiDAR‑based power curve testing methodologies.
Speakers:
- Mairead Lynch, Wind Consultancy Manager – Pacific
- Jesús Pinedo, Global Operations Manager, Wind Measurement and Testing, Barlovento Applus+
- Ana Barreno, Wind Turbine Test Engineer
- John Medley (ZX Lidars), Head of Head of Data and Insights
